Change Makers Through History; What I Learned from Our Class Presentations
We completed in SPC a presentation on change makers throughout history. Our class was divided into groups, and each group focused on a different time period ranging from the 1700s to the 2000s. My group, Group 4, was responsible for presenting change makers from the 1700s. At first, I thought it might be difficult to talk about people who lived so long ago, but after researching and listening to the other presentations, I realized how much impact these individuals had on the world we live in today.
Preparing for the presentation gave me a better understanding of how important change makers are in shaping society. Many of the people from the 1700s challenged traditional ways of thinking and introduced ideas that influenced politics, science, education, and human rights. Even though technology was limited during that time, these individuals were able to spread their ideas and inspire change that would continue for generations. Learning about their accomplishments made me appreciate how much courage it takes to stand up for new ideas, especially when those ideas are unpopular or controversial.
One thing I enjoyed about this project was working with my group. Everyone contributed in different ways, whether it was researching information, creating slides, or helping organize the presentation. Group projects can sometimes be challenging because everyone has different schedules and work styles, but our group worked together well. We communicated effectively and made sure everyone understood their role. This helped reduce stress and made the overall experience more enjoyable.
When it came time to present, I felt more comfortable than I expected. Public speaking is something that can make many students nervous, but I felt prepared because I had spent time reviewing the material beforehand. Knowing the information helped me feel confident while speaking in front of the class. I still had some normal nerves before starting, but once I began talking, those feelings went away. The more I focused on sharing information rather than worrying about being judged, the easier the presentation became.
Listening to the other groups was also one of the most valuable parts of the assignment. Since each group covered a different century, we were able to see how change makers evolved over time. The presentations showed how different challenges existed in different eras and how influential individuals responded to those challenges. For example, some change makers focused on political reform, while others focused on science, civil rights, technology, or social justice. Even though their goals were different, they all shared a desire to improve society in some way.
One thing that stood out to me was how change often starts with a single person who is willing to think differently. Many of the individuals we learned about faced criticism, resistance, or obstacles, yet they continued pursuing their goals. Their determination reminded me that meaningful change rarely happens overnight. It usually takes persistence, patience, and a willingness to overcome setbacks. This lesson can be applied not only to history but also to our own lives as students. Whether we are working toward academic goals, career goals, or personal goals, success often requires consistent effort over time.
The presentation also helped me improve my communication skills. Public speaking is something that many people will encounter throughout their careers, regardless of their profession. Being able to organize information, explain ideas clearly, and engage an audience are important skills that extend beyond the classroom. This assignment gave me another opportunity to practice those skills in a supportive environment. I believe each presentation we complete helps build confidence and makes future speaking opportunities feel less intimidating.
I appreciated seeing the creativity that each group brought to their presentation. Although everyone was discussing historical figures, each group had a unique approach to presenting information. Some used visuals effectively, while others incorporated interesting facts or engaging explanations. These different styles kept the presentations interesting and showed that there are many ways to communicate information successfully.
Looking back, I think the most important takeaway from this project was understanding the lasting impact that change makers can have on society. Many of the people we discussed lived hundreds of years ago, yet their ideas continue to influence our world today. Their contributions remind us that individuals can make a difference regardless of the challenges they face. Learning about their stories was both educational and inspiring.
I enjoyed this assignment and felt that it was a valuable learning experience. It allowed me to learn more about historical figures from the 1700s, strengthen my public speaking skills, and collaborate with classmates. I also gained a greater appreciation for the individuals who helped shape history and create positive change. The project reinforced the idea that progress often begins with people who are willing to challenge the status quo and work toward a better future. As a student, it was motivating to see how one person's actions can influence generations to come.
In conclusion, the change makers presentation was one of the more engaging activities we completed in SPC. My group's focus on the 1700s gave me insight into a period of history that I had not previously explored in depth. The experience helped me become more confident as a speaker while also teaching me valuable lessons about leadership, perseverance, and the power of ideas. I believe the presentation was successful because it combined research, teamwork, and communication skills while encouraging us to reflect on the individuals who have shaped our world.
