Liz's Presentation Blog

For my SPC class, my group did a presentation on public speaking, and my part specifically focused on Chapter 17, which was about special occasion speeches and group presentations. At first, I expected to feel nervous presenting in front of the class, but honestly, I felt pretty fine once it was time to speak. I think being prepared and understanding my topic helped me stay calm during the presentation.Chapter 17 was actually more interesting than I thought it would be. Before this class, I never really thought about how many different types of speeches people give in everyday life. The chapter talked about special occasion speeches like introduction speeches, acceptance speeches, toasts, roasts, after-dinner speeches, and public testimony. At first, these sounded simple, but once I started learning more about them, I realized they all serve different purposes and require different speaking styles. Some speeches are more formal, while others are more emotional, entertaining, or persuasive.

One thing I liked about this presentation assignment was getting the chance to speak in front of the class and practice public speaking skills in a real setting. Even though a lot of people get nervous about presentations, I actually felt comfortable while presenting my chapter. I think sometimes people overthink presentations before they happen, but once you start talking, it becomes easier. For me, the nervousness was more before going up than during the actual presentation itself.I also liked hearing the other presentations from my classmates and group members. Everyone had different speaking styles and different ways of organizing their slides. Some people used humor, some were more serious, and others made their presentations interactive. It kept the class interesting because every presentation felt different. I think everyone did a good job presenting overall, and it was nice seeing how people became more confident while speaking.

Another thing I liked about my chapter was how relatable it was to real life. Public speaking is not only about classroom presentations or speeches in front of huge audiences. Special occasion speeches happen all the time in real situations. For example, people give toasts at weddings, acceptance speeches when receiving awards, and introduction speeches before events. It made me realize that communication skills are important in almost every part of life, whether it is school, work, or personal situations.I did not really like about presentations in general is that they can sometimes feel long when multiple groups are presenting during the same class period. Even when the presentations are good, sitting through several presentations in a row can get tiring. I also think that some people naturally feel more anxious with public speaking than others, so it can create pressure for students who are uncomfortable speaking in front of a class. Even though I felt okay presenting, I could tell some classmates were nervous.

While working on my part of the presentation, I learned that presenting is not only about knowing the information. Delivery matters a lot too. The way someone speaks, their tone of voice, eye contact, confidence, and body language all affect how the audience reacts. A person can have really good information, but if they read directly from the slides the entire time or sound uninterested, the audience can lose attention quickly. Watching different presentations helped me notice what presentation styles work better and which ones make it harder to stay engaged.

Since I knew my chapter and reviewed my material ahead of time, I felt more relaxed while presenting. I think if I had gone into the presentation unprepared, I would have been much more nervous. Knowing what I was talking about helped me feel more confident while speaking to the class. I noticed during this assignment was how public speaking is really a skill that improves with practice. Some people are naturally more confident speakers, but most people get better the more experience they have. I think this class gave everyone more practice with speaking in front of others, and that is something that can help in future classes, jobs, and everyday situations. Communication is an important skill no matter what career someone chooses.

I think this presentation experience was positive for me. I enjoyed presenting Chapter 17 and learning more about special occasion speeches and group presentations. I also liked hearing everyone else present their chapters because it made the class more interactive and interesting. Even though presentations can sometimes seem stressful, this experience showed me that public speaking is not as bad as people think it is.

Overall, I would say the biggest thing I learned from this project is that confidence and preparation are the most important parts of presenting. Nobody expects a presentation to be perfect. What matters most is understanding the topic, communicating clearly, and staying confident while speaking. I think everyone in the class did a great job, and overall the presentation experience felt much easier and more enjoyable than I originally expected.
